Gisele Zanellato: An Imaginary Museum Where Art History Is Reinvented

Gisele zanellato

As part of Art Riviera Tour 2026, held in Saint-Jean-Cap-Ferrat and organised by Wendy Lauwers and Multi Art Gallery, ART MAG highlights Gisele Zanellato, an artist who transforms the masterpieces of art history into a living dialogue. Rather than simply quoting the past, she reinvents it by creating compositions in which iconic works, celebrated artists, and artistic movements meet beyond the boundaries of time.

When Art History Becomes a Creative Playground

Museums usually present artworks according to their period, movement, or place of origin.

For Gisele Zanellato, those boundaries disappear.

Van Gogh meets Frida Kahlo. Klimt converses with Warhol. Fragments of world-famous masterpieces come together within the same composition to create entirely new visual narratives.

Rather than reproducing the masterpieces of the past, the artist gives them a new life, allowing them to interact through a distinctly contemporary visual language.

A New Reading of the Great Masters

Trained at the Higher School of Arts in Mons, Gisele Zanellato combines collage, printed imagery, and folded paper to create richly layered relief compositions.

Each fragment retains the memory of its original artwork while becoming part of an entirely new creation.

The viewer’s eye moves naturally from one reference to another, gradually discovering unexpected connections between artists, periods, and artistic sensibilities.

Beyond Recognition

Gisele Zanellato’s works first engage our visual memory.

The viewer recognises a detail, a colour, or a familiar face.

Then the gaze lingers.

New relationships begin to emerge, revealing artworks that go far beyond the simple pleasure of recognising famous references. Each composition becomes a space for exploration, where every careful observation offers a fresh interpretation.

A Museum Without Boundaries

Many of her works take the form of boxes or framed assemblages filled with numerous folded fragments.

These creations evoke both cabinets of curiosities and museum collections.

Yet here, chronology no longer matters.

Works of art circulate freely, regardless of the century or artistic movement to which they belong. This imaginary museum celebrates above all the vitality of artistic creation and the enduring ability of great works to inspire long after their own time.
