Following his exhibition in Paris in September 2026, Dominique Lucci is continuing his journey in Japan. From 19 to 30 November, Gomeisa Gallery in Tokyo will present Who Are You, Dominique Lucci?. The Grenoble-based artist has developed a distinctive world populated by hybrid creatures, fragmented bodies and absurd situations. A universe in which drawing, poised between humour and strangeness, unsettles our certainties.

In Dominique Lucci’s world, animals are not always what they seem. Rabbits chase a hunting dog, bodies fragment and objects appear to take on lives of their own. Behind these sometimes comical scenes lies a more unsettling universe, where roles are reversed and reality slips into the imaginary.
From 27 to 29 September 2026, the artist presented Vous disiez ? at Galerie Wood Green in Paris’s 3rd arrondissement. Jointly organised by Tokyo-based Gomeisa Gallery and p.k.g maison, which was responsible for the curatorial direction, the exhibition forms part of an ongoing collaboration centred on Dominique Lucci’s work between France and Japan. It will be followed by a new exhibition in Japan at the end of November.

A Bestiary Between Humour and Strangeness
Born in 1975 and a graduate of the École des Beaux-Arts in Valence, Dominique Lucci lives and works in Grenoble. His practice draws on close observation of everyday life, only to divert and transform its familiar forms. Architecture, vegetation, ordinary objects and animal figures become the protagonists of scenes in which conventional rules appear to have been suspended.
Inspired by old master prints, Surrealist collage and comic books, Lucci has developed a distinctive graphic language. Bodies metamorphose, species merge and power relations are reversed. Humans can become prey to animals, while animals themselves adopt gestures and attributes borrowed from our own world.
Yet beneath the fantasy of these compositions lies a more diffuse sense of unease. Humour tempers the cruelty of certain scenes without ever making it disappear entirely. The images amuse before they unsettle, leaving viewers free to construct their own narratives.
It is within this balance between the familiar and the strange that much of the singularity of Dominique Lucci’s work resides.

When Drawing Takes Over the Space
Although drawing remains at the heart of his practice, Dominique Lucci refuses to confine it to the sheet of paper. He extends it onto walls, ceramics and textiles, while also exploring its possibilities through animation.
Some of his experiments reveal his attraction to constraint. On long strips of thermal paper, he uses the glowing tip of an incense stick to create his figures. The gesture must be both swift and precise: the challenge is to draw without allowing the heat to destroy the surface.
His site-specific interventions are particularly revealing of his approach. Before taking over an exhibition space, Lucci explores its surroundings, sketchbook in hand. Façades, signage, plants and seemingly insignificant details become graphic material that he later transposes into the interior.
The drawing moves around corners, follows architectural features and continues from one wall to another. It is no longer something to be viewed only from the front: it unfolds through movement and discovery. The exhibition space itself becomes an integral part of the work.
In 2015, with Forêt, presented at Espace Vallès, a contemporary art centre in Saint-Martin-d’Hères, Dominique Lucci combined acrylic paint and video projections. Here too, the wall was no longer simply a support, but a space to be occupied and transformed.

From Paris to Tokyo
With Vous disiez ?, presented at Galerie Wood Green in September 2026, Dominique Lucci continues a career that has already seen his work exhibited at several French institutions, including the Fondation Bullukian in Lyon, the Musée dauphinois in Grenoble and the Théâtre national de Chaillot in Paris.
After Paris, his universe is now heading to Tokyo. From 19 to 30 November 2026, Gomeisa Gallery will present Who Are You, Dominique Lucci? on the first floor of the Imperial Hotel Plaza. This new exhibition extends the dialogue between France and Japan that has developed around the artist’s work.
Whether working on a sheet of paper or across the walls of an exhibition space, Dominique Lucci pursues the same exploration: that of a world in which appearances are deceptive and imagination continually disrupts the obvious.
His drawings do not so much seek to reproduce reality as to shift it. They reveal its inconsistencies, absurdities and potential metamorphoses, leaving viewers with the sometimes uncomfortable pleasure of no longer quite recognising what they are looking at.
