The Fondation Louis Vuitton, renowned for its commitment to contemporary art, presents from 9 April to 31 August 2025 an exceptional exhibition dedicated to David Hockney, an iconic figure in modern painting. This retrospective, simply entitled ‘David Hockney 25’, celebrates the artist’s seven-decade career by highlighting over 400 works that trace a rich and varied career, from his earliest beginnings to his most recent creations.
An immersion in the world of Hockney
The exhibition opens with Hockney’s earliest works, revealing his explorations from the 1950s to the 1970s. From the outset, visitors are plunged into the artist’s world with works such as ‘Portrait of My Father’ (1955) and the famous swimming pool paintings such as ‘A Bigger Splash’ (1967). These works, characterised by their luminosity and bold use of colour, laid the foundations for what would become an ongoing exploration of the effects of light and space.
The diversity of media
What particularly distinguishes this exhibition is the incorporation of modern technologies into Hockney’s work. The artist, who has always been at the forefront of the use of new media, presents works produced on iPad and video installations, demonstrating his fluid transition from brush to touch screen. These digital works, produced in recent years, demonstrate his ability to adopt and master new tools for artistic creation.
Nature as muse
The central section of the exhibition is an ode to nature, a theme that has figured prominently in Hockney’s recent work.
